Useful Information for the Completion of Q5 |
Solid Walls – More common in older buildings, a mixture of stretcher and header bricks i.e. longways and endways (see diagram below). The thickness of the wall tends to be about 225mm (9”), which is best measured at a window or doorway. |
Cavity Walls – All bricks tend to be ‘stretchers’ i.e. longways (see diagram below). The thickness of the wall tends to be about 300mm (12”), which is best measured at a window or doorway. |
Timber Frame Walls - Load bearing structure is a timber frame. Often finished with bricks to make it look like cavity wall. Best identified by the hollow sound when outer wall is tapped from inside. Windows will be placed within the timber frame and not the outer bricks. Also identified by looking inside meter boxes, looking at the gable whilst in the loft space (will see wood instead of bricks or blocks in the wall part of the loft). |
